Paul and Helen may consider their love story “practical,” but Wee Kirk has never heard of a love story as sweet as theirs. On December 28, 2013; this happy-go-lucky couple walked through the doors of our chapel to renew their vows in the same spot where they first recited them. Yes, Paul and Helen were married at our chapel on December 28th, 1946 and are still going strong after 67 years married and 90 years young.
It was love at first sight for the pair. Back in March of 1946, Paul visited his newly married brother and his sister-in-law on their ranch in Pomona, California. When he walked through the door, he noticed a young lady wearing a black and white checkered pantsuit asleep on the couch. As Helen opened her eyes, she got a glimpse of her future husband. Dressed in mustard yellow pants; Helen immediately noticed how handsome Paul was.
Shortly after, the young pair became a couple. They enjoyed taking rides in Paul’s gray ’41 Mercury convertible. They’d cruise around town listening to music, stealing kisses, and partake in some “hanky panky!” When they weren’t taking drives together, you could find them cutting a rug on the dance floor.
Nearly nine months later, as Paul visited Helen on his Christmas break from the University of Idaho; he looked over at Helen and uttered something that would change both of their lives forever. “Let’s get married,” he declared. Helen instantly agreed and before long, the spontaneous couple was on their way to Las Vegas.
During the four hour drive, Paul picked up his best friend, Nelson Parker, who served as the best man. When the trio entered Sin City, they found the cutest chapel around-Wee Kirk!
Once they were married, Paul went back to school in Idaho and Helen accompanied him. That spring, she became pregnant with their first child. In the years to come, Helen and Paul raised three more children. The family purchased their first home in 1953, as well as their first pet-Nabs, a St. Bernard. Their life was picture perfect!
In the 67 years they spend as husband and wife, Paul and Helen have traveled the world together, shared lots of laughs, and lived a full and happy life. They couldn’t think of a more perfect time to renew their vows and knew exactly where they wanted to do it!
Love comes in many forms. This couple appreciates the little things in life and knows how to create and treasure special moments. Congrats, Paul and Helen. Here’s to many more years together in love and good health!
